Research Overview

I am interested in the intersection of diversity initiatives, gender, and employee decision-making at work. Some of my current work investigates the following questions:

  • How do employee lay theories about the gender gap shape their support for diversity initiatives? (2nd R&R at Academy of Management Journal)

  • What are the signaling effects associated with offering egg freezing coverage to employees, relative to other work-life policies, and do these signals lead to unintended consequences? (Flynn & Leslie, 2022, Journal of Applied Psychology)

  • If leaders talk about the challenges associated with diversity, as well as the benefits, can they more effectively increase support for diversity than if they talk about the benefits alone? If so, why? (Leslie, Flynn, Foster-Gimbel, & Manchester, 2023, Academy of Management Journal)

  • How do people think about the role of families and intergenerational transfer of resources in the maintenance of social advantage and disadvantage? (Flynn, Allen, & Phillips, in prep for submission)

  • Are people who prioritize extrinsic rewards (vs. intrinsic) in their job choice more inaccurate in their affective forecasting about work? If so, why and what are the implications for how we understand career decision-making? (Flynn, Nurmohamed, Whillans, & Hur, data collection)
